Salt and Water Stress Tolerance in Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea tricolor, Two Ornamentals with Invasive Potential

چکیده

Invasive plants pose a significant threat to biodiversity, especially under the current unstable climatic conditions. This study aimed test salt and drought tolerance of two ornamental species genus Ipomoea during germination vegetative growth. Germination tests were performed in presence increasing NaCl concentrations or iso-osmotic PEG concentrations—to mimic osmotic stress caused by drought. Both showed great invasive potential because their high seed percentages rapid control (distilled water) conditions, up 200 mM NaCl. early seedling development more affected PEG. Subsequently, water (complete withholding irrigation) (watering with 100 NaCl) treatments applied young for three weeks, when all harvested, determine several morphological biochemical parameters. sensitive deficit but relatively resistant stress. Their responses similar, based mainly on inhibition Na+ activation K+ transport from roots leaves uptake accumulation Ca2+; however, I. tricolor slightly higher than purpurea. Although has only been locally reported as is generally considered ‘low-risk’ species, our results indicate that it may have an even purpurea, recognised weed, spread into areas moderate salinity, affecting agricultural land natural habitats ecological interest.

Close clustering of anthers and stigma in Ipomoea hederacea enhances prezygotic isolation from Ipomoea purpurea.

Theory predicts that, for taxa that are already substantially postzygotically isolated but for which hybrid mating is still costly, enhanced prezygotic isolation will be favored. Here, we tested this hypothesis by examining the potential contribution of one particular floral trait, herkogamy, to prezygotic isolation between two species of morning glory, Ipomoea hederacea and Ipomoea purpurea. T...

Membrane Lipids in Senescing Flower Tissue of Ipomoea tricolor.

Rib segments excised from flower buds of Ipomoea tricolor Cav. pass through the same phases of senescence as the respective tissue on the intact plant. Such segments were used to correlate changes in lipid content with known symptoms of aging, such as rolling up of the ribs and ethylene formation. It was found that the level of phospholipid had already started to decline before visible signs of...

Genetic Constraints and Selection Acting on Tolerance to Herbivory in the Common Morning Glory Ipomoea purpurea.

Tolerance to herbivory minimizes the effects of herbivory on plant fitness. In the presence of herbivores, maximal levels of tolerance may be expected to evolve. In many plant species, however, tolerance is found at an intermediate level. Tolerance may be prevented from evolving to a maximal level by genetic constraints or stabilizing selection. We report on a field study of Ipomoea purpurea, t...

Glyphosate induces transient male sterility in Ipomoea purpurea

Plant death is the most common effect resulting from the application of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup1. Individual seedlings of the morning glory, Ipomoea purpurea L. Roth, however, have been shown to exhibit tolerance to glyphosate, surviving after what should have been a lethal dose. Those that grow and reach reproductive maturity often exhibit deformed anthers wi...
